But only one of them keeps thinking about it.</p><p>Robert Sapolsky has spent decades studying stress in both baboons and people. His research shows that our bodies are built for short-term emergencies, but things like memories, news stories, or worries about the future can trigger the same stress response. We can&#8217;t always avoid stress, but often it&#8217;s our reaction afterward that does the most damage.</p><p>A lot of these habits seem harmless, and some even feel helpful. But once you spot them, you can stop yourself from adding more stress to your day.</p><p>Here are nine common ways we keep stress going long after the real problem is over.</p><h2><strong>1. Replaying a conversation that already ended</strong></h2><p>The party is over. The meeting is finished. But your mind keeps going back to it.</p><p>You keep thinking about the conversation, remembering someone&#8217;s expression or what you wish you had said. It might feel like you&#8217;re solving the problem, but most of the time you&#8217;re just reliving the same embarrassment or frustration. Your body still reacts as if the threat is real.</p><p>Sapolsky explains that people can remember their most awkward or embarrassing moments and keep feeling stressed long after they&#8217;re over. A five-minute event can turn into hours of replaying it in your mind.</p><p>Thinking things over can help you learn, but going over the same issue again and again just keeps you stuck. Ask yourself: Are you learning something, solving the problem, or just repeating it on an endless loop?</p><h2><strong>2. Rehearsing a disaster that hasn&#8217;t happened</strong></h2><p>Your mind imagines the bad news before the test results come in. It worries about losing your job before the meeting even happens. It expects rejection before you even ask the question.</p><p>It can feel like you&#8217;re getting ready for what might happen, but you&#8217;re not. Your body reacts to every imagined problem, even if it never comes true. Sapolsky says this is one of the strangest things about human stress: we don&#8217;t need a real danger. Our minds can make one up from memories or imagination.</p><p>Preparing helps you make a decision. Worry just goes in circles and only feels like planning.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png" width="1456" height="819" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:819,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1901242,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/i/208233233?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!WUbZ!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3d017aae-845a-47c8-af0b-8f628df8ddcd_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><h2><strong>3. Opening the news before your feet hit the floor</strong></h2><p>Many people start their day by reading about wars, shootings, market crashes, or arguments online. Even if nothing happened where you are, your body can still feel like danger is close.</p><p>Sapolsky&#8217;s research shows that reading about suffering far away can trigger the same stress response as real danger. The issue isn&#8217;t staying informed. The problem is starting your day with bad news you can&#8217;t do anything about. That keeps your stress levels high for no real reason.</p><h2><strong>4. Deciding there&#8217;s nothing you can control</strong></h2><p>Feeling powerless is stressful by itself. Stress gets even harder when you think you can&#8217;t control anything. Even making a small choice can help you feel better in a tough situation.</p><p>Having some control can make daily stress easier to handle. But some things are out of everyone&#8217;s hands, and looking for what you could have done differently often just makes you feel guilty for no reason.</p><p>Instead of trying to control everything, focus on the next helpful step. Withdrawing exactly when you need people most</strong></h2><p>Stress often leads people to cancel plans and stop answering calls, saying they&#8217;ll reconnect when things settle down. But that&#8217;s when isolation takes away one of the best ways to cope with stress.</p><p>Sapolsky says real support isn&#8217;t about having lots of contacts. You can know many people and still feel alone. What really helps is having someone who stays by your side when things get hard, not just a big group chat.</p><h2><strong>6. Treating one setback as proof everything is falling apart</strong></h2><p>Two people can go through the same tough week. One sees it as just a temporary problem. The other sees it as proof that everything is falling apart.</p><p>Sapolsky says the way we see events changes how stressful they feel. Not getting a reply can feel like rejection. One bad morning can make it seem like all your progress is gone. This isn&#8217;t about pretending things are okay when they&#8217;re not. Sometimes things really do get worse. But stress often makes one problem feel much bigger, so it helps to separate facts from feelings before you decide what&#8217;s really happening.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png" width="1456" height="819" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:819,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1558365,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/i/208233233?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!LQ9l!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6b9b6191-cf69-4144-a444-22090b2e1c02_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><h2><strong>7. Saying yes when you mean no</strong></h2><p>Every time you say yes when you don&#8217;t have to, you add more stress to your week. People often agree to things just to avoid disappointing someone, but then end up quietly resenting it.</p><p>Sapolsky&#8217;s advice about saving twenty minutes a day isn&#8217;t really about the time. It&#8217;s about the choice behind it: your well-being matters enough to make space for it. Setting that boundary does more than free up your schedule. It reminds you that your time is still yours. Some of the times you say no will feel uncomfortable, but that&#8217;s easier to handle than the resentment that comes from always saying yes.</p><h2><strong>9. Turning stress relief into one more task to fail at</strong></h2><p>The to-do list starts to grow: Meditate for twenty minutes. Write three pages in your journal. Take a cold plunge. Track your sleep.</p><p>Now you end up feeling stressed about not handling your stress well enough.</p><p>Meditation helps some people relax, but others just worry if they&#8217;re doing it right. What matters most is finding something that really helps you and that you&#8217;ll keep doing, even after it stops feeling exciting.</p><p>For someone else, relief might come from taking a walk, gardening, playing music, or knitting.</p><p>The best way to handle stress is to find something that really helps you and that you&#8217;ll still want to do a year from now.</p><p><strong>The Stress After the Stress</strong></p><p>The stress response isn&#8217;t broken. It&#8217;s doing exactly what it evolved to do: get you through the next few minutes of danger.</p><p>The problem is that modern life gives our stress system lots of false alarms. A memory, a news headline, an unanswered text, or even a worry about next week can trigger it.</p><p>You might not be able to avoid the first stressful event, but you can often stop the second wave of stress that comes after.</p><p>The next time stress sticks around long after the moment is over, ask yourself:</p><p><strong>Am I responding to what is happening right now, or am I reacting to something that has already ended or may never happen?</strong></p><p>You might not be able to stop your first reaction to stress, but you can choose not to keep fueling it.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Clear. I&#8217;m safe. There&#8217;s nothing to worry about.</p><p>But your body doesn&#8217;t seem to get the message.</p><p>This is the frustrating reality of anxiety. Most people who deal with it aren&#8217;t confused about the facts. They know flying is safer than driving to the airport. They know a meeting isn&#8217;t life or death. They know the grocery store is just a grocery store. The problem isn&#8217;t what they know.</p><p><strong>The real issue is that your mind and your nervous system learn in different ways. That&#8217;s why simply reassuring yourself often doesn&#8217;t help.</strong></p><p>Here&#8217;s a sentence I&#8217;ve heard hundreds of times from clients: &#8220;I know it&#8217;s irrational, but I still feel it.&#8221;</p><p>That sentence sums up the problem. Your thinking mind has already done its job. It has reviewed the evidence, run the numbers, and reached a verdict: no danger here. But your nervous system isn&#8217;t convinced.</p><p>This is how you&#8217;re wired and knowing that can change how you deal with anxiety.</p><p><strong>Your nervous system learns through experience. Words alone rarely change how you feel. Logic can change your thoughts, but experience changes how you respond.</strong></p><p>Think about your phone&#8217;s GPS. If it detects heavy traffic on your usual route, it keeps rerouting you until it receives new information. You can tell it the road is clear, but it won&#8217;t believe you just because you said so. It changes when it gathers enough new evidence.</p><p>Your nervous system works the same way. It doesn&#8217;t update because you reassure yourself. It updates because repeated experiences teach it something new.</p><p><strong>Fear Is Learned. Safety Can Be Learned Too.</strong></p><p>A lot of this learning happens in a small part of your brain called the amygdala. It often gets a bad reputation, but its job is surprisingly simple. It&#8217;s constantly scanning for danger and asking one question:</p><p><strong>&#8220;Am I safe?&#8221;</strong></p><p>To answer that question, the amygdala doesn&#8217;t rely on logic. It relies on experience.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png" width="1408" height="768" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:768,&quot;width&quot;:1408,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:2374489,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/i/207206477?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ysyt!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d43f32e-fd1d-4d9a-931c-fd4a9e86eec1_1408x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p>If you&#8217;ve had a frightening experience in an elevator, while driving on the freeway, speaking in public, or even walking into a crowded store, your brain remembers more than the event itself. It remembers the context. The next time you find yourself in a similar situation, your amygdala doesn&#8217;t stop to investigate whether today&#8217;s circumstances are different. It makes a prediction based on past events and prepares your body for danger.</p><p>In other words, it&#8217;s not reacting to what&#8217;s happening right now. It&#8217;s reacting to what it expects could happen.</p><p>That&#8217;s why just telling yourself, <em>&#8220;I&#8217;m safe,&#8221;</em> often doesn&#8217;t help. You&#8217;re trying to reason with a system that doesn&#8217;t use logic. It&#8217;s like a smoke detector that&#8217;s become too sensitive after a real fire. Even though it&#8217;s frustrating, it&#8217;s only trying to protect you.</p><p>The encouraging part is that these predictions aren&#8217;t permanent. They&#8217;re constantly being updated by new experiences. Every time you stay in the situation long enough to discover that nothing bad happens, every time your body settles instead of escaping, your nervous system gathers new evidence.</p><p>The opposite happens too. If you leave a situation before your brain has a chance to discover there&#8217;s no real danger, it gets a different message: <em>&#8220;Good thing we left. That must have been dangerous.&#8221;</em> Avoiding things might feel better for a moment, but it makes the fear stronger next time.</p><p>Recovery starts when your nervous system no longer treats every wave of anxiety as a sign you&#8217;re in danger.</p><p>Fear is learned.</p><p>And because it&#8217;s learned, safety can be learned too.</p><p><em><strong>So how can you give yourself the experiences you need to learn to feel calm rather than fear?</strong></em></p><h3><strong>Three Ways to Teach Your Brain That You&#8217;re Safe</strong></h3><p>This is the heart of what I talk about, so let&#8217;s get specific. There are three main ways to make real progress, and each one works by giving your nervous system new evidence, not just new arguments.</p><p><strong>1. Give Yourself New Experiences</strong></p><p>One of the best ways to calm your nervous system is to slowly return to the situations you&#8217;ve been avoiding and realize you&#8217;re actually okay.</p><p>This doesn&#8217;t mean you should jump straight into your biggest fear and hope it works out. That can actually make things worse. Instead, take small, steady steps that challenge you but don&#8217;t overwhelm you. Stay in the grocery store a couple of minutes longer than usual. Go to that party. Speak up once in a meeting instead of staying quiet.</p><p>Each small step becomes another piece of evidence. Every time you face something you&#8217;ve been avoiding and realize you&#8217;re okay, your amygdala learns that the situation isn&#8217;t as dangerous as it expected. The more proof it gets, the less it sounds the alarm.</p><p><strong>2. Calm the Body</strong></p><p>Your nervous system pays attention to your body before it listens to your thoughts.</p><p>To your brain, a racing heart and tight chest feel just like real danger. It doesn&#8217;t matter if the threat is only in your mind. </p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Your body can&#8217;t tell the difference between a bear and a stressful email. </strong></p></div><p>That&#8217;s why calming your body with your breath often works better than trying to think your way to calm.</p><p>Try exhaling more slowly than you inhale. Splash cold water on your face or wrists. Put both feet on the ground and name five things you see. Spend ten minutes outside. These aren&#8217;t just tricks, they send your body a clear signal that helps override the alarm. As your body settles, your brain quietly updates its sense of safety. Calming your body often works faster than calming your mind.</p><p><strong>3. Update Old Emotional Memories</strong></p><p>Some of the alarms you feel today aren&#8217;t really about today. They&#8217;re old memories, sometimes from years or decades ago, still running in the background like outdated software.</p><p>These old experiences taught you, &#8220;I&#8217;m not safe here.&#8221; Maybe it was one event, or maybe it happened so often it became your default. Either way, these memories affect you whenever something similar happens.</p><p>Over the years, I&#8217;ve tried many ways to deal with anxiety. The two I use most are hypnosis and EFT because they align with how the nervous system really learns. They don&#8217;t just try to reassure you with words. They help you have a different emotional response.</p><p>With time, the strong feelings tied to those old memories start to fade. This lets you respond more calmly and flexibly, instead of always sounding the alarm.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png" width="1456" height="971" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:971,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:2363855,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/i/207206477?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1zVN!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F48019d9e-aa87-401a-b444-1bce92a7202e_1536x1024.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p><strong>Why Repetition Beats Willpower</strong></p><p>Most people assume they need more willpower. In reality, lasting change comes from giving your brain enough new experiences that it no longer sees the situation as dangerous.</p><p>Your brain isn&#8217;t fixed. It changes and reshapes itself with practice, a process called neuroplasticity. Every time you choose calm over panic, or stay with a difficult situation instead of avoiding it, you&#8217;re strengthening a new pathway in the brain.</p><p>Think about learning to drive. The first few times behind the wheel, every decision takes effort. You&#8217;re thinking about the mirrors, the pedals, the speed, and the traffic all at once. After enough repetition, you don&#8217;t have to think nearly as much. The brain has built a stronger pathway.</p><p>The same thing happens with anxiety. Right now, your brain may have a well-worn pathway that says, <em>&#8220;Crowded places are dangerous,&#8221;</em> or <em>&#8220;If my heart races, something must be wrong.&#8221;</em> Every time you stay in that situation long enough to discover you&#8217;re okay, you strengthen a different pathway. Over time, the new response begins to feel more natural than the old one.</p><p>The brain follows the pathways it uses most. Keep doing small brave things, calming your body, and updating old memories, and the new path gradually becomes the easier one to follow.</p><p><strong>Where This Leaves You</strong></p><p>Even the most capable, smart people I&#8217;ve worked with have felt frustrated that their logic couldn&#8217;t calm their fear. But logic isn&#8217;t the language your nervous system understands.</p><p>Safety, just like fear, is learned through experience, not argument. Your mind built its current sense of threat from real moments and repeated experiences, even if some are outdated. <strong>It can learn a different response.</strong> It can learn that you&#8217;re no longer in danger.</p><p>That&#8217;s the process. With each new experience, you&#8217;re showing your nervous system something it may have forgotten: you&#8217;re safe now. One small experience at a time, your brain can learn that again.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Clear. You just want the feelings to stop, so you look for distractions and hope it goes away. Maybe you eat some ice cream, take a few deep breaths, or have a drink.</p><p>As anxiety gets stronger, you start to avoid the things that set it off. Maybe you get an invitation, have a meeting coming up, or the phone rings. Suddenly, your heart beats faster, your chest feels tight, and you feel a wave of dread. Right away, your mind suggests a way out: skip it, cancel, stay home, or say you&#8217;re busy.</p><p>Each time you choose the safer option, the relief feels immediate and real. Canceling plans, leaving a crowded room, or avoiding a difficult conversation makes the anxiety fade, at least for the moment. Your nervous system treats that relief as evidence that avoiding the situation worked. Before long, avoidance stops being something you do and starts shaping the life you live. Your world slowly gets smaller, the list of &#8220;safe&#8221; places grows shorter, and you find yourself changing more and more of your life just to avoid discomfort.</p><p><strong>Every time you avoid something that makes you anxious, your brain learns to expect even more anxiety the next time.</strong></p><p><strong>The Amygdala Is Taking Notes</strong></p><p>To understand why avoidance doesn&#8217;t work, it helps to know how your brain deals with threats. The amygdala, a small almond-shaped part deep in your brain, works like an internal alarm. It&#8217;s always watching for danger, and when it finds something that reminds it of a past threat, it reacts. This triggers the physical signs of anxiety: adrenaline, a faster heartbeat, feeling on edge, and wanting to get away.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png" width="1408" height="768" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:768,&quot;width&quot;:1408,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:2075299,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/i/207074995?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!KwVb!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F75293559-9832-4dc5-bcf3-f1eae0332b2d_1408x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p>Your amygdala cares more about your actions than your thoughts. If you avoid something, it doesn&#8217;t think, &#8220;They skipped the party because they were tired.&#8221; Instead, it notes, &#8220;This was so dangerous we had to leave.&#8221; Each time you avoid something, it confirms the threat. Every time you escape, it strengthens the belief that the danger was real. Over time, your amygdala gets more sensitive, so more things set off the alarm, and you end up avoiding even more to keep anxiety away.</p><p>Researchers call this the anxiety-avoidance loop: anxiety makes you avoid things, avoiding brings relief, and that relief makes you want to avoid it again. So the next time something similar happens, your anxiety is just as strong or even worse. The world doesn&#8217;t have to get more dangerous, your body just becomes more convinced that it is.</p><p><strong>How Avoidance Grows</strong></p><p>Avoiding one situation usually doesn&#8217;t stop there. For example, picture a woman who has a panic attack in a crowded movie theater. She leaves early, gets some fresh air, and feels better. The next week, a busy restaurant makes her feel the same way, so she steps outside again. After a few months, any crowded place, the subway, a waiting room, or a birthday party, feels impossible.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png" width="1408" height="768" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:768,&quot;width&quot;:1408,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:2256686,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/i/207074995?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!1ZKy!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F10e98ee0-2791-4641-8749-dd2396a458c4_1408x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p>Over time, avoidance doesn&#8217;t just affect one part of your life, it starts to affect everything. What might look like shyness or introversion from the outside is often a nervous system that has learned to see connection as a threat.</p><p>Avoidance isn&#8217;t always easy to spot. Sometimes it means turning down invitations or calling in sick. Other times, it shows up as staying busy all the time, putting things off, over-planning, or always needing a backup plan. No matter how it looks, it keeps your brain from learning that you can handle what you fear.</p><p>That moment matters because anxiety naturally goes up and then down if you don&#8217;t run away or avoid it. Your body can&#8217;t stay on high alert forever. If you stay in the situation you fear for a while, you&#8217;ll see the anxiety eventually fades. When you don&#8217;t leave and nothing bad happens, your brain has to rethink what is actually dangerous.</p><p><strong>Your brain gets new evidence.</strong></p><p><strong>Maybe this wasn&#8217;t dangerous after all.</strong></p><p>Avoidance takes away your brain&#8217;s chance to learn something new. So the belief that the situation is dangerous stays, and the pattern keeps going.</p><p><strong>The Paradox of Trying Not to Be Anxious</strong></p><p>There&#8217;s another side to this, beyond just avoiding situations, and it can be even more harmful over time. Many people with anxiety aren&#8217;t just avoiding things around them, they&#8217;re also fighting the feeling of anxiety itself.</p><p>They tense up, judge themselves for feeling anxious, worry about what it means, keep checking how bad it is, and get worn out trying to hide it from others.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Trying not to feel anxious is just another kind of avoidance. </strong></p></div><p>It works the same way as avoiding things on the outside and leads to the same results. The more you try to push anxiety away, the more you focus on it, and the stronger it gets. It&#8217;s like trying to make yourself fall asleep: the harder you try, the harder it is. The main point is simple: fighting anxiety can keep it going.</p><p>The more you focus on anxiety while trying to get rid of it, the louder it often gets. As the saying goes, what you resist persists.</p><p>People who often judge or hide their emotions are more likely to have anxiety and depression. When you judge yourself for feeling anxious, you add more stress, create shame, and make it even harder to handle the original feeling.</p><p>Trying to get rid of anxiety just makes the struggle worse.</p><p>The safest choice isn&#8217;t always truly safe, and that&#8217;s the paradox of anxiety. What feels safest right now can lead to more fear later.</p><p><strong>Avoidance gives you relief today but brings more fear tomorrow. In the end, it costs more than it protects.</strong></p><p><strong>The good news is that if your brain learned this pattern, it can learn a new one.</strong></p><p><strong>That&#8217;s when your brain can start to write a different story.</strong></p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Clear. Fear might mean you&#8217;re unsure about something. Frustration can show you need something you&#8217;re not getting. Guilt can mean you&#8217;ve gone against your values. Joy shows you what&#8217;s important to you.</p><p>Every emotion is asking you to notice something. The key is to figure out what it means before you react.</p><p><strong>So Why Do Emotions Feel So Powerful?</strong></p><p>If emotions are just messages, why do they sometimes feel so intense?</p><p>It starts with your nervous system, which has one main job: keeping you safe. It&#8217;s always checking what&#8217;s happening around you and keeps asking, Am I safe?</p><p>If the answer feels like &#8220;no,&#8221; your body reacts before your mind can catch up. Your heart beats faster, your muscles tense up, and your breathing becomes shallow.</p><p>After that, your mind starts to create a story to explain why you feel scared. That&#8217;s why anxiety can seem so real. Your body sounds the alarm, and your mind tries to figure out why.</p><p>What happened?</p><p><strong>Your Boss Walks Past You Without Saying Hello</strong></p><p>One person might spend the next hour thinking, &#8220;He&#8217;s mad at me. Did I mess something up?&#8221;</p><p>Someone else just shrugs and thinks, &#8220;Rough morning, I guess.&#8221;</p><p>It&#8217;s the same walk and the same silence, but two totally different afternoons. Nothing actually happened between you and your boss. He just walked by, and that&#8217;s all. The rest came from the story you told yourself about what it meant.</p><p>This happens all the time. Maybe a text isn&#8217;t answered for hours, a friend seems distant at dinner, or traffic makes you late. The event itself is neutral, but your brain quickly adds meaning without you even noticing.</p><p>That meaning comes from old beliefs, past experiences, and habits you formed long ago. For example, someone who grew up tiptoeing around an unpredictable parent might see silence as a warning sign. That lesson made sense back then, but it doesn&#8217;t help anymore. Still, the brain keeps using it.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>The good news is you can change the story.</strong></p></div><h2>Four Questions To Ask When Emotions Take Over</h2><p>Instead of asking, &#8220;How can I get rid of this feeling?&#8221; try asking yourself<em> better questions:</em></p><h3>What am I really feeling?</h3><p>Be specific when you name the emotion. Don&#8217;t just call it &#8220;bad,&#8221; &#8220;off,&#8221; or &#8220;weird.&#8221; Try saying something like &#8220;Anxiety about my job interview&#8221; or &#8220;Sadness after my breakup.&#8221;</p><p>UCLA research shows that simply naming an emotion can make it feel less intense. It helps your brain shift from reacting automatically to being more aware.</p><h3>What is this emotion trying to tell me?</h3><p>Try to be curious. Being curious helps you avoid judging yourself, which only makes emotions harder to handle.</p><h3>Is the story I&#8217;m telling myself really true?</h3><p>Ask yourself if it&#8217;s really true, not just probably true or feels true, but something most people would agree with. Often, it isn&#8217;t.</p><h3>What does my nervous system need right now?</h3><p>Maybe you need to take a walk, breathe slowly, or talk to someone who supports you. Sometimes, even if we don&#8217;t want to admit it, we just need some sleep.</p><h3><strong>What Emotional Mastery Actually Is</strong></h3><p>People who are emotionally wise don&#8217;t react to every feeling right away. They pause, get curious, and ask what the emotion is trying to say before choosing how to respond.</p><p>Every emotion has something to tell you. The real question isn&#8217;t whether you&#8217;ll have tough emotions, but whether you&#8217;ll learn from what they&#8217;re trying to show you.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png" width="642" height="350.1818181818182" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:768,&quot;width&quot;:1408,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:642,&quot;bytes&quot;:2543169,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/i/206947291?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hrRb!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F888a03af-4892-4517-962c-0134752283f4_1408x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p>Over time, something surprising happens. And when my body settled down, my mind usually followed.</strong></em></p><p>When your nervous system senses danger, it reacts right away, whether the threat is real or not. Your heart beats faster, your muscles tense up, and your mind jumps to the worst-case scenarios.</p><p>Anxiety makes your mind focus on the future. Your body&#8217;s alarm system acts like there is danger, even when you are actually safe. Grounding techniques help break this cycle by bringing your attention back to your body and your surroundings. This gives your nervous system evidence that the threat has passed and helps it calm down.</p><p>These simple physical practices can interrupt the stress response long enough for your nervous system to recognize that you&#8217;re safe. Sometimes that&#8217;s all you need to regain your footing.</p><p>The good news is you can often interrupt this cycle in just a few minutes.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="pullquote"><h2><strong>Breathe Slowly</strong></h2></div><p>Breathe in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth. Try to make your exhale a bit longer than your inhale. For example, breathe in for a count of five and out for a count of eight.</p><p>Repeat this five times, and focus on each breath as you do.</p><p>When you are stressed, your breathing often gets shallow without you noticing, which can make anxiety worse. Slowing down and taking deeper breaths signals to your brain that the danger has passed.</p><div class="pullquote"><h2><strong>Engage Your Five Senses</strong></h2></div><p></p><p>Look for five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. Anxiety often grows in your imagination, feeding on worries and what-ifs. Paying attention to your senses brings you back to the present moment.</p><div class="pullquote"><h2><strong>Cold Therapy</strong></h2></div><p>Cold exposure is a powerful but often overlooked way to quickly calm your nervous system. Applying something cold to your face (or even your neck or chest) activates calming reflexes in your nervous system, including pathways involving the vagus nerve. This helps slow your heart rate and breathing and can reduce anxiety.</p><p>You do not need an ice bath to get the benefits. Try splashing cold water on your face, holding a cold pack to the back of your neck for thirty seconds, or finishing your shower with a quick cold rinse. Your body often responds within seconds. Many people find that cold exposure quickly interrupts anxiety by shifting the body&#8217;s state.</p><div class="pullquote"><h2><strong>Hold Your Fingers (Jin Shin Jyutsu)</strong></h2></div><p>Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient Japanese healing practice.</p><p>In this tradition, each finger is associated with a different emotional state. While there is not yet much modern scientific evidence, many people find this simple practice surprisingly calming because it combines gentle touch with slow, mindful breathing.</p><p>To try it, gently wrap your other hand around one finger, hold it for two to three minutes, and breathe. Research on the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, shows that even a short time among trees can lower cortisol, slow your heart rate, and calm your mind.</p><p>You do not need to find a forest. A park, garden, beach, or even a quiet street with old trees can help. Leave your phone in your pocket for a few minutes. Walk slowly and notice the bark, the sound of the wind, and the light. Feel the ground under your feet. Some early research suggests that touching the earth, called earthing or grounding, can help relieve stress in your body.</p><p>The next time anxiety or stress starts to take over, remember you do not have to just wait for it to pass. Your body already has ways to return to calm. Sometimes it just needs a gentle reminder.</p><p>Choose one of these techniques and try it today. Practice it when you&#8217;re already feeling calm. The more familiar it becomes, the easier it will be to use when life gets overwhelming.</p><p><strong>Which of these techniques has helped you the most or which one are you going to try first? Once that story took hold, her brain kept looking for evidence that it was true and overlooking evidence that it wasn&#8217;t.</p><p><strong>2: Your nervous system</strong></p><p><strong>(How you react)</strong></p><p>Your nervous system is always asking one question:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Am I safe?</strong></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a But after chronic stress, painful experiences, or repeated disappointment, your nervous system can become overly protective. It begins treating everyday situations as if they&#8217;re threats.</p><p>That&#8217;s why you might avoid opportunities, overreact to criticism, or feel anxious for no obvious reason. On first glance, it looks like you&#8217;re being betrayed by your body and mind, but in reality, they are trying to protect you based on what they learned in the past.</p><p>The encouraging news is that your nervous system can learn new patterns. With the right tools and repeated experiences of safety, it can become less reactive and more resilient. As that happens, it becomes easier to make decisions based on what you truly want instead of what you&#8217;re trying to avoid.</p><p><strong>3: Your habits</strong></p><p><strong>(What you repeatedly do)</strong></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png" width="1024" height="608" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:&quot;normal&quot;,&quot;height&quot;:608,&quot;width&quot;:1024,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!uUas!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F211b8ff6-f4eb-4f6f-b889-eca678262a56_1024x608.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p>Your life is shaped less by what you do once in a while than by what you do every day. The small choices you repeat become habits, and those habits quietly shape your health, relationships, confidence, and future.</p><p>Most habits run on autopilot. You don&#8217;t consciously decide to procrastinate, reach for your phone, or avoid difficult conversations. Your brain prefers familiar patterns because they require less effort.</p><p>The encouraging news is that habits can change. Every small action you repeat strengthens a new pattern. Over time, those small changes can lead to a very different life.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>Can we change?</strong></p><p>You can&#8217;t control everything that happens to you but you can influence how you interpret it, how your nervous system responds to it, and the habits you practice afterward.</p><p>Those three things shape far more of your future than luck ever will.</p><p>My friend thought the solution was to change her circumstances.<span> </span>Change careers, move to another city, change her diet&#8230; The truth is she needed to question the story she&#8217;d been telling herself.</p><p>Once she adopted a new story and a new way of looking at her life then her goals and dreams started unfolding with ease.<span> </span>People would say life became easy for her but the real truth is that she became braver.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>Why Change is Possible</strong></p><p>None of these three forces are permanent.</p><p>Your beliefs can change. Your nervous system can learn that it&#8217;s safe again. Your habits can be replaced with healthier ones.</p><p>This isn&#8217;t just wishful thinking. Neuroscience shows that the brain can continue changing throughout life. Every time you question an old belief, calm your nervous system, or practice a healthier habit, you&#8217;re teaching your brain a new way to respond.</p><p>Real change takes time, but every small step moves you in the right direction.</p><p>This isn&#8217;t about pretending everything is positive or forcing yourself to think happy thoughts. It&#8217;s about understanding the hidden patterns that have been shaping your life and realizing you have the ability to change them.</p><p>And when those patterns begin to change, your life often changes with them.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>Where We Go From Here</strong></p><p>For years, I felt like life was happening <em>to</em> me. I was anxious, stressed, and stuck in patterns I couldn&#8217;t seem to break. What finally changed wasn&#8217;t my luck or my circumstances. It was understanding that my beliefs, my nervous system, and my daily habits were quietly shaping the life I was living.</p><p>That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m writing this newsletter.</p><p>If you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or like something needs to change, you&#8217;re not broken. You&#8217;re living from patterns your brain and body learned over time. The good news is that those patterns can change.</p><p>In the weeks ahead, we&#8217;ll explore practical, science-informed tools to help you do exactly that: calm your nervous system, challenge limiting beliefs, build healthier habits, and create a life that feels lighter and more intentional. Because life doesn&#8217;t have to be about surviving. It can become about growing, connecting, and enjoying what&#8217;s possible.</p><p>So let me leave you with one question.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>What belief about yourself have you been treating as a fact?</strong></p></div><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://clearcalmalive.life/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Clear.
